The Cylinder: The core of a pin tumbler lock (the most common type) is the cylinder. Inside the cylinder are several pins of varying lengths.
The original key has grooves that correspond to these pins. When the correct key is inserted, it pushes the pins to the correct height, allowing the cylinder to turn and the lock to open.
Rekeying involves replacing the original pins with new ones.
This requires a new set of keys with different grooves to match the new pin configuration.
